One might believe that while strolling through the aisles of the MWC (Mobile World Congress) in Barcelona, we would only come across flexible smartphones or transparent screens. And yet, we also find products that are much less nomadic. At the Xiaomi stand, for example, the manufacturer showed visitors its vision of the laundry room, a device consisting of two drums for washing and drying laundry. The lower part corresponds to the washing machine which can contain, according to the technical sheet, 15 kg of textiles. Above, we find the dryer with a capacity of 10 kg.

No doubt to further reinforce the aesthetic side of the machine, Xiaomi has completely abandoned the control panel on the facade to place it on the upper window: the effect is also quite successful. Note that the Mijia Dual Drum can be programmed remotely thanks to its connection to a smartphone or tablet, which explains its presence at the Barcelona show. As shown in the cutaways provided by Xiaomi, it is on the other hand behind this famous porthole that we find the detergent tray, always so that the facade retains its completely bare side.

These photos also indicate that Xiaomi has chosen direct drive motors, without belts. This type of engine is intended to consume less energy, more durable and quieter than conventional engines.

A not-so-new novelty

We don’t know much more about this style exercise, and it is very unlikely that it will one day arrive here. In fact, no marketing date and no price have been communicated. This is not the first time that a manufacturer has tried this type of product, with results that can be described as mixed. The latest comes from the American Whirlpool, which unveiled its WashTower set with great fanfare a few months ago. But, years earlier, Haier had already presented a prototype at IFA 2016. And, still stronger, it was even a device with three drums – all intended for washing laundry, that said – that Hisense had caused a sensation during the same IFA in Berlin.
