“My son and my grandchildren”, the body of a man found, two children still missing

This Monday, March 11, a father and his two children aged 4 and 12 are missing, in Dions in the Gard. The family was carried away by the flood of the Gardon, while they were in their car. The grandmother confided her anguish in the columns of Parisian. “We’ve been hanging on the phone and glued to our television since this morning. Everyone is calling us, but we don’t know anything”, explains Christiane, the mother of the missing man.

Her son, daughter-in-law and grandchildren disappeared after had dinner at her house on Saturday evening. The car was swept away by the flood, near a submersible bridge which was not closed to traffic. “When they left, around 11 p.m., it was raining hard, but there was nothing alarming either. It was my daughter-in-law who took the wheel, she didn’t drink a drop of alcohol and is never reckless”, says the grandmother.

Only the mother could be saved

The family managed to take refuge on the roof of the car and were able to contact emergency services. But only the mother was able to be rescued and transported to the Nîmes University Hospital. Her partner and their two children were taken away with the car which has since been found empty. “I just cry and cry and hope. Like a mother waiting for her son…” Christiane despairs. “I just want to find my son and my grandchildren.”

On Sunday March 10, an exceptional system was deployed to try to find the two children and the father. In total, 32 firefighters including 20 underwater rescuers were mobilized, helped by 2 drones, a dog team and a helicopter. And this Monday, March 11, we learn that a body could be found. This is probably the father, even if the Prefecture of Gard has not confirmed it, the latter has linked this discovery with the previous disappearance. The bodies of the two children have still not been found.

Thanks to the decline of the Gardon, new spaces have become accessible to research. Result, this Monday March 11, 110 firefighters and 120 gendarmes are mobilized. They are helped by two helicopters, 3 drones, 6 dogs and water rescuers. For the moment, 14 roads are still closed and 21 bridges closed.

The balance sheet therefore amounts to 4 deaths as a reminder, 3 other bodies had already been found. Namely that of a man, this Sunday morning in Gagnières and the bodies of two women aged 47 and 50. The three victims were swept away in their car by a swollen river.
