In May, Canal+ makes you go through all the emotions: the big poilade with The torchKoh-Lantesque suite of The flamestill with Jonathan Cohen, the breathless tension with The Responderthriller in five episodes with Martin Freeman, and the exotic vertigo of Dunes, giga-adaptation of Frank Herbert’s novel by Denis Villeneuve. If you prefer gloomy malaise, the Palme d’Or Titanium also lands this month on the encrypted channel. And to recover from all these emotions, you can always embark with The Rock and Emily Blunt in Jungle Cruiseadapted from a successful American Disneyland attraction.

Event of the month: The Torch: Adventurers of ChupacabraMay 23

After making a splash during confinement in 2020, The flame finally returns to Canal+. Or rather, The torch, since it is no longer a question of parodying the Bachelor, but of Koh-Lanta this time. A good way to remind the cast of the main character of the first season, Marc (or MARC), still played by Jonathan Cohen, as well as several actresses also present before such as Leïla Bekhti, Géraldine Nakache, Adèle Exarchopoulos or Ana Girardot. New faces complete the distribution, and not the least: Kad Merad, Gérard Darmon, Mister V, Jonathan Lambert or even Jérôme Commandeur, who replaces Vincent Dedienne as presenter. Like any good survival game, The torch promises its share of betrayals, strategy and more or less epic moments, but also and above all good stupidity as Jonathan Cohen and his clique know how to provide us.

We are curious: The Responderfrom May 9

We are a long way from the good-natured Watson of the series sherlock, but here is Martin Freeman again as an English cop, in a series that flirts much more with hyperrealism. And for good reason, The Responder was written by a former policeman whose ambition was clear: to show the complexity of this often very tough profession through its representatives, and the psychological fragility of the latter. The main character is a cop from Liverpool – expect a nice gallery of accents – in the midst of an existential crisis, juggling between his badass side with sometimes brutal methods and a painful past that has left quite a few traces. In the exercise of his duties, he gets along with petty crime, exposing his new teammate, a freshly landed recruit who will have to get used to the practices of his comrade. In short, nothing very original in this scenario, but this mini-series in five episodes promises a palpable tension from the first images, and great interpretations.

We will (re) see with pleasure: DunesMay 20

Last year’s global box office sensation, Dunes already lands on Canal+. If you haven’t seen it in theaters, which is a shame given its mastodontic aspect, you will therefore be able to immerse yourself in the fascinating universe imagined by Frank Herbert and brought to life here by Denis Villeneuve. The latter was able to capture and transcribe the grandeur and mysticism of the original work very well, enhanced by impressive visuals and a soundtrack – signed Hans Zimmer – that perfectly matches the general atmosphere. To top it off, this trip to the planet of Arrakis is made in the company of a 5-star cast, from Timothée Chalamet to Zendaya via Josh Brolin, Oscar Isaac or Javier Bardem.

And besides that ?
