Nagoshi Studio will always make games in the style of Yakuza

We are influenced by movies and are interested in creating games that provide a high level of human drama. That’s what amuses us. As before, I hope to create games in this vein that can reach a global audience. So you won’t see us making puzzle games for smartphones or anything else. These games are fun, but what we know how to do and what the world expects of us are games with dramatic and moving stories, and that’s what we want to do. So that’s where we focus“, confirmed the one who had joined Sega in 1989 and worked on titles like Daytona USA, F-Zero GX and Super Monkey Ball before becoming the guardian of the RGG Studio temple.

At this stage, Nagoshi can’t say anything about the setting that will be chosen, but believes that the worldwide success of his next game depends less on the place where it takes place than on the quality of the scenario. “For our next game to be a global hit, I don’t think the setting is that important. If the story is good, then the French can be moved by a film by Takeshi Kitano, while we in Japan can appreciate an Indian film.“, he observes.

On the other hand, it is better not to be in too much of a hurry, because Nagoshi Studio currently only houses the dozen or so executives who left RGG Studio to accompany Nagoshi in this new adventure. It will therefore be necessary to recruit before being able to produce a game of the scale of Yakuza, but Toshihiro Nagoshi does not intend to exceed a hundred employees. This workforce does not allow to work simultaneously on several projects, the idea is therefore to focus on one game at a time.

Finally, Toshihiro Nagoshi explains that his goal is to unveil the game as soon as it is in a good enough state to be shown, in order to have time to take player reactions into account and make adjustments accordingly.
