With a running time of over four hours, Ridley Scott’s “Napoleon” will even trump Martin Scorsese’s “Killers of the Flower Moon.” But when does the long version start?

Ridley Scott has made numerous films in his decades-long career as a director, including genre milestones such as “Alien” and “Blade Runner”, but also historical epics such as “Gladiator” and “Kingdom of Heaven”. What is striking is that almost all of Ridley Scott’s films received a director’s cut at a later date.
This alternative cut offered us the version of the films that Scott favored, which was sometimes significantly longer, but sometimes only had differences in content. In this way, Scott is always ready to implement the demands of the film studios, because the director’s cut later gives him the opportunity to realize his films exactly as he wanted.

Ridley Scott’s new film “Napoleon” with Joaquin Phoenix opens in German cinemas on November 21, 2023. At 158 minutes, “Napoleon” is anything but short, although one is used to longer running times in historical films of this type.
It’s hardly surprising that Scott is also planning a longer version of “Napoleon”. As he revealed to Total Film according to GamesRadar, he is already working on his long version. This extended version is said to be four hours and 10 minutes long, in which the role of Napoleon’s wife Joséphine in particular is expanded.

Unsurprisingly, Sony has no interest in such a long film version for theatrical release. “Killers of the Flower Moon” by Martin Scorsese, with its running time of 206 minutes, or almost 3.5 hours, is too long for some film fans – especially if they cannot pause the film.
As soon as “Napoleon” appears on Apple TV+ – the stream release is expected at the beginning of 2024 – you will be able to watch the XXL version of Ridley Scott’s historical epic. “Killers of the Flower Moon” will probably land on Apple’s streaming service around the same time, so look forward to long movie evenings!
