“Napoleon” rides into the home cinema: Ridley Scott’s historical epic is now streaming

Whether it’s “Alien”, “Blade Runner” or “Kingdom of Heaven” – Ridley Scott’s best films became even better with the director’s cut. In the case of “Napoleon,” Scott didn’t mind making a 157-minute theatrical version because Apple TV+ agreed to stream his director’s cut of the film.

Most of the reviews for “Napoleon” were positive, but also mentioned the narrative, which sometimes seemed quite hackneyed. Two and a half hours is anything but short, but when you take almost 90 minutes out of a four-hour film, it’s bound to be noticeable.

Of course, it could be that the four-hour director’s cut of “Napoleon” is too long for many viewers, but it is undoubtedly director Ridley Scott’s favorite version. History fans will definitely enjoy watching both versions, but it makes sense to wait for the long version to stream.

When does “Napoleon” start on Apple TV+?

While Netflix usually only shows its own productions in a few cinemas for a few weeks in order to be considered for an Oscar nomination, Apple TV+ lets films like “Killers of the Flower Moon” and “Napoleon” run exclusively in cinemas for an indefinite period of time.

This is good for the films that don’t simply get lost in the oversupply of new releases on streaming, but on the other hand it is so difficult to predict a likely release date for the director’s cut of “Napoleon”.

“Killers of the Flower Moon” has now been released on Apple TV+. The streaming service will certainly not release “Napoleon” until some time later, so that casual subscribers have to pay for the streaming service for at least two months.

“Killers of the Flower Moon” took a month and a week between its video-on-demand release and its launch on Apple TV+. According to this logic, “Napoleon” can be expected on Apple TV+ around mid/late February.

It is not yet known whether Apple TV+ will release the theatrical version of “Napoleon” first and perhaps save the director’s cut for a late release in November or December 2024.

The theatrical version of “Napoleon” is already not on Apple TV+, but on Amazon, iTunes/Apple TV and Co since January 9, 2024 available. Just like with “Killers of the Flower Moon,” you can buy and rent the film first before it moves to the regular Apple TV+ program at a later date.
