It has been clear since Tuesday that there will be no change in the head coach position at Nati until the 2024 European Championship in Germany. However, this does not apply to all positions on the staff: Yakin assistant Vincent Cavin is likely to leave the national team. He had already informed the association about Lausanne-Sport’s offer as sports director before the last qualifying games. In the meantime, there are increasing signs of his departure. Tami would like to clarify her successor this year.

The numbers are right – the results are not

The Ticino also commented on the content of the analyzes that led to the decision in favor of Yakin: When reviewing the qualification, among other things, a diagram axis was created in which the combined value of ball possession and goal threat was shown.

With the exception of one game (away against Kosovo), Switzerland was always in the desired range. This underlines the dominance with which the team performed, said Tami. “The big question is why we left so many points behind despite these values.”

No “killer instinct”

Tami missed “the killer instinct” and “the emotions in the penalty area” from the team. Too often it seemed to him as if the players went for the finish or the aerial duel because it was expected of them in this situation – he didn’t see the “final conviction”.

These are points of criticism that in many cases lead to the coach being fired. Why not at Yakin? “Murat recognized the challenges and presented us with solutions,” said Tami. He kept to himself what these actually looked like. He said only that Yakin had made suggestions that convinced him and the board.

No contact with Fischer or Favre

Tami emphasized again that Yakin had achieved all his goals since taking office. “There were no reasons to terminate the contract with our coach, which ran until after the European Championships.” However, there were obviously no reasons to extend the contract. Tami left it open whether Yakin’s long-term future would be clarified before the European Championships. It is possible that discussions will be held in the spring.

For now, it was important to Tami that the performances were not glossed over, as the coach had done during the campaign. «Murat was self-critical and he presented us with a clear plan regarding the squad and staff. With this foundation, we are ready to continue to support him.” There were no contacts with other trainers such as Urs Fischer or Lucien Favre.
