“The extreme right has never been so close to power,” said Hollande. “There is political confusion in our country.” In view of this serious situation, he decided to run as a candidate in the Corrèze department in southwest France as part of the new left-wing alliance “Le Nouveau Front populaire.”

The 69-year-old was French head of state from 2012 to 2017. The Socialists, France’s Left Party, the Greens and the Communists had previously announced that they would run together as an alliance in the parliamentary elections, without initially naming a top candidate.
Even after Hollande’s end as president, he remained present in French politics and occasionally consults with his successor Emmanuel Macron.
In response to the defeat of his liberal forces in the European elections and the landslide victory of the right-wing nationalists, President Emmanuel Macron surprisingly dissolved the National Assembly and announced new elections for June 30 and July 7.
