National Council Basel-City – Loss of seats for the Basel Left: A reflection of the political forces – News

Contents

Because Basel-Stadt is losing a seat in the National Council, the Basel parties have been faced with a bitter fact from the start: a previous person will be voted out.

It is logical that the deselection of Mustafa Atici (SP) affects a seat from the left-wing camp. It is a reflection of the political balance of power in the canton of Basel-Stadt: Red-Green and the bourgeois are roughly equally strong blocs in the city canton. The fact that both sides get two seats each corresponds to these conditions.

Big disappointment for Mustafa Atici (SP), even if the loss of seats in the red-green camp was to be expected.

If the Basel Left had been able to swear in all three seats, it would have been clearly overrepresented in the National Council.

Basel only elects women

In addition to the four National Councilors, Eva Herzog is also defending her seat for the city canton in the small chamber. On the one hand, this is a coincidence, but not only: several Basel parties have been consistently committed to promoting women for a long time.

In the bourgeois camp, however, the good result of the Green Liberals is surprising. They are even doing better than the FDP – and are becoming an important voice in the bourgeois camp.

GLP overtakes more votes than FDP

GLP National Councilor Katja Christ defends her seat and this deserves respect. Because four years ago, political Basel turned up its nose at her election. There was talk of electoral tricks because Christ made it to Bern, among other things, because of controversial connections to the lower list. That’s over – the GLP defends its seat and is now on an equal footing with the other bourgeois parties in Basel.

On the other hand, the result for the LDP is disappointing. It was rumored in advance that the party could even get two seats: that the LDP could win another seat in addition to the seat of the previous Patricia von Falkenstein.

But the LDP is far from that. In addition to von Falkenstein, the party seems to have been missing the driving forces. Four years ago, the political great Christoph Eymann was still a vote guarantee on the list. In addition, the LDP traditionally performs better in cantonal elections than in national elections.

Nevertheless, there are clear losers

Even if the red-green party’s loss of seats can be explained for mathematical and party-political reasons, there is still a clear loser: Basel-Stadt. The canton is the leading force in Switzerland’s second strongest economic region. A significant representation in Bern would therefore be appropriate. With only four seats, Basel is now weakened again.
