National Council Canton St. Gallen – The SVP celebrates, the GLP loses its seat – News

Contents

The 12 National Council seats in the canton of St. Gallen will be re-elected. The GLP wobbly seat goes to the SVP.

Four years ago, the St. Gallen SVP, which is the party with the most votes in the canton, lost a seat in the National Council. The then CVP (now center) was also one of the losers in 2019. Franziska Ryser (Greens) and Thomas Brunner (GLP) joined the National Council, who rather surprisingly won a mandate. The climate parties and women were the big winners.

This year, the seat of the GLP is particularly wobbling. Thomas Brunner is no longer running for re-election. The SVP wants its fifth seat back, which it lost. And that’s exactly what it looks like according to the projection. Franziska Ryser, who failed as a candidate for the Council of States in March, is likely to be re-elected and thus able to hold the Green Party seat.

There is further tension around the FDP and the center. The FDP continues to dream of a third National Council seat, and the center is also aiming for a third seat. She tries to win this over seven lists.

Then there are lists of parties that do not yet have a seat in the National Council, such as the EDU, the Swiss Democrats (SD), the EVP or, now, the non-party, Aufrecht and Mass-Voll groups.
