BUDAPEST (Reuters) – The Hungarian government supports Sweden’s candidacy for NATO, Prime Minister Viktor Orban said in a telephone conversation with Jens Stoltenberg, the secretary general of the military alliance.

“I reaffirm that the Hungarian government supports Sweden’s candidacy for NATO,” Viktor Orban said in a message published on X, formerly Twitter.

Viktor Orban also added that he told Jens Stoltenberg that he will continue to ask the Hungarian parliament to vote in favor of Swedish membership in the alliance and to conclude its ratification as soon as possible.

Jens Stoltenberg said after the telephone interview that Viktor Orban and his government clearly support Swedish membership.

“I look forward to ratification as soon as parliament reconvenes,” he said on X.

The Turkish parliament ratified Sweden’s membership of NATO on Tuesday, making Hungary the only country in the alliance not to have ratified.
