A US military plane crashes during a NATO exercise in Norway. Four people died, the police have now confirmed. The V-22 Osprey aircraft had disappeared in poor weather conditions.

Four people were killed when a US military plane crashed during an exercise in Norway. This was confirmed by the police in the Norwegian province of Nordland today according to a report by the public broadcaster NRK. According to Norwegian police, the dead are US citizens.

Norway’s Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Støre expressed his condolences to the relatives and comrades of the victims. “Our deepest sympathy goes to the families of the soldiers, relatives and comrades in their unit,” Støre wrote on Twitter.

It is still unclear why the V-22 Osprey plane crashed. According to local rescue workers, the US military plane disappeared at 6:26 p.m. CET south of Bodö on Friday. Bad weather conditions prevailed in the area at that time. The US Army had confirmed an “incident” involving a US Marine Osprey aircraft. The police announced investigations.

Germany also takes part in “Cold Response”.

The flight took place as part of the Cold Response exercise. The main part of the defense exercise began on Monday. The maneuver, in which Germany and numerous other NATO members are involved, is scheduled to end on April 1st. The main activities should first be on water and in the air.

“Cold Response” takes place every two years in winter conditions in Norway. Around 30,000 soldiers from 27 NATO countries and partner countries are involved, including thousands of land, sea and air forces.
