NATO supports members’ purchase of around 1,000 Patriot missiles

BRUSSELS, Jan 3 (Reuters) – The North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) said on Wednesday its procurement body would support a group of member countries including Germany, the Netherlands, Romania and Spain, for the purchase of a thousand Patriot air defense missiles.

The agency awarded a production and delivery contract to COMLOG, a joint venture of Raytheon and MBDA, the military alliance said in a statement, adding that European missile production would expand.

“The consolidated multinational acquisition, in the spirit of the European Air Shield Initiative (ESSI), allows for economies of scale and supports the expansion of the production capacity of the new GEM-T missiles in order to meet growing demand,” NATO said in a statement.
