At the end of 2023, Google announced the new “Immersive View” feature for routes in Google Maps. The function has now appeared in Germany, but initially only on Android.
In the editorial department, we were already able to use the immersive view for routes on an Android smartphone. After setting a route, a preview image for the feature appears at the bottom left. If you click on it, the image zooms into an immersive 3D view that shows your surroundings in detail and three dimensions. This means you can navigate even better and recognize buildings on streets more easily.
The function has long been available for special places such as sights in cosmopolitan cities, for example the Brandenburg Gate in Berlin. Now at least Android users can also use the function for routes. If you use an iOS device, you will probably have to wait a little longer for the corresponding update.
At the beginning of 2024, an update will gradually be released that will enable Google Maps routes to be displayed on the lock screen. This means you don’t always have to unlock your cell phone to see the respective route.
