There’s a new “Doctor Who”! Ncuti Gatwa slips into the role of the popular time traveller.

A new “Doctor Who” has been found: As the BBC has now announced, actor Ncuti Gatwa (29) succeeds Jodie Whittaker (39) in the popular series. This makes the 29-year-old the 14th actor to play the famous time traveller. Scottish actor Gatwa, who was born in Rwanda, is best known for his role in the Netflix series Sex Education.

“There are no right words to describe how I feel,” the actor is quoted as saying in the press release. He feels “deeply honored” and is overjoyed. But he’s also a little scared: “This role and this show mean so much to so many people around the world, including me.” He is scheduled to make his debut as “Doctor” in 2023.

Successor to Jodie Whittaker

Jodie Whittaker announced last year that she will no longer be in front of the camera for “Doctor Who”. There will still be three specials with her in 2022. It has long been speculated who will succeed her – even Hugh Grant (61) was suspected of being the new “doctor”. But he denied the rumors in March.

Since the series first aired in the UK in 1963, there have been 13 different incarnations of The Time Lord: William Hartnell, Patrick Troughton, Jon Pertwee, Tom Baker, Peter Davison, Colin Baker, Sylvester McCoy, Paul McGann, Christopher Eccleston, David Tennant , Matt Smith, Peter Capaldi, and Jodie Whittaker.
