But in 2023, interest in gifts is not really the subject for a quarter of French people. According to a study conducted by Kantar for the eBay platform, no less than 23% of French people plan to resell Christmas gifts that are not popular or are given as duplicates.
In 2023, resale will have another face: inflation
In other words, 9.5 million people in France will take this step, compared to 7 million in 2022. In ten years, the percentage of people concerned has even increased by 10 points. The study indicates that this idea of resale particularly concerns “ 25-44 years old with children in regions where purchasing power is lowest ».
The reasons are varied, but some of them are unfortunately obvious in these times. The 1,340 adults surveyed, aged 16 to 64, said they hoped to earn on average 49 euros by reselling their Christmas gifts. For 42% of them, this amount will be saved. For 29%, the money will be used to replace the gift. But for the remaining approximately 30%, these funds recovered from resale will instead be used to pay part of the Christmas bills.
Finally, 18% of all those surveyed plan to use this average 49 euros to buy a gift for a loved one. Interestingly enough, the most resold gifts include video games, toys and books. As the study commissioned by eBay states, “ the best Christmas sales always reflect the best Christmas sales ».
