Nearly one in two employees are subject to a high level of stress, according to the latest Qualisocial survey

Even as the economy gets darker, the human resources consulting firm Qualisocial has taken stock of the state of mind of employees. To do this, from November 23 to 29, 2023, Ipsos surveyed a representative sample of 3,002 people working for private and public employers, administrations included.

Qualisocial thus intends to evaluate the impact of quality of life and working conditions (QVCT) on health, commitment and well-being, in order to “empowering public and private organizations to act where employees need it most”. “Economic difficulties always represent a significant risk for mental health: poor future prospects and tensions at work increase psychosocial disorders,” explains Camy Puech, the president of the consulting firm.

49% of respondents say they experience a high level of stress in their lives. Nearly one in two employees surveyed (48%) are satisfied with their workload, but 23% consider it problematic, generally because they consider it excessive. This proportion rises to 34% in the hospital public service.

The weight of professional factors

The survey does not make it possible to precisely distinguish the share of professional variables which contribute to employee stress, to the extent that personal aspects (marital status, age) also come into play and have a particular impact on the health of employees. That said, “companies where the workload is problematic have three times more employees who consider themselves to be in poor health than those where the workload is perceived as balanced”, observes Camy Puech.

More generally, 53% of respondents say they are in good physical or mental health, but only 39% both. 19%, on the other hand, believe they are in poor mental health. And this proportion reaches 56% among those who feel an imbalance between their professional and personal lives, an item which partially overlaps with workload.

37% of employees say they “rather or very fulfilled” in their life, 21% “little or not fulfilled”. The others are positioned between the two. Professional factors weigh heavily in this distribution, since the least fulfilled are concentrated in the disadvantaged categories. The proportion of dissatisfied thus reached 26% among workers (compared to 15% among senior managers), 23% among non-supervisory employees (compared to 13% for “top management”), 28% among employees with household income. an annual income of less than 15,000 euros (compared to 13% among those earning more than 60,000 euros).
