In two years, more than 3.3 million additional households have subscribed to netflix.

In an interview given to JDD, Ted Sarandos, co-CEO of Netflix, revealed the number of subscriber households in France. The last time the company had communicated such a figure dates back to January 2020. In just over two years, the video on demand platform has welcomed a few million additional members.

A number of subscriber households up by almost 50%

At the start of 2020, Netflix had just under 7 million subscriber households in France: 6.7 million precisely. Now, the American firm reports a little over 10 million subscriber households. This is an increase of about 50% (49.2% if we stop at 10 million).

Ted Sarandos specifies that a household represents five accounts. As a result, the number of French users of the service is much higher. To get an idea, Médiamétrie estimated it at around 14 million at the start of 2020; maintaining this ratio, it would therefore be 21 million currently.

Be that as it may, the appetite of the French for streaming platforms clearly appears in the data from ARCEP. The report on the state of the Internet in France that it published a few days ago underlines the considerable share of video content in overall Internet traffic: it represents more than half of the traffic. Netflix tops the list with a 20% share.

222 million subscribers worldwide

Globally, Netflix has 222 million subscribers. Nevertheless, during the first quarter of 2022, the platform lost 200,000 subscribers, a phenomenon not seen in a decade.

Nothing to worry Ted Sarandos, at least in appearance. The latter recalls that 2021 was a record year for the platform, driven by successes such as Don’t Look Up or the series Squid Games. In addition, the co-CEO of Netflix explains this slight decline by the suspension of the service in Russia, a country with 700,000 subscribers, as well as by falling connected TV sales.

Finally, remember that Netflix is preparing the launch of a less expensive offer but including advertisements.
