Netflix cancels this prestigious series after just one season, despite a sequel ordered

It’s official, Nurse Mildred Ratched is hanging up the gown. Three and a half years after the broadcast of season 1 and its open ending, Netflix finally announced the cancellation of the series Ratched. A surprising decision, since a season 2 had nevertheless been ordered by the streaming platform.

At the origins of One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest

Created by Evan Romansky and produced by Ryan Murphy (Glee, The Watcher, Dahmer), Ratched is a funny project.

This series derived from the film One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest, released in 1975, centers on the torture nurse in Jack Nicholson’s place of confinement. A chilling character, which also earned its interpreter, Louise Fletcher, the Oscar for best actress at the time.

The series returns to the origins of the nurse, played here by Sarah Paulson (American Horror Story, 12 Years a Slave), and in particular on her first job in a renowned psychiatric hospital… where she will reveal her dark side.

Ratched will therefore not exceed eight episodes, despite an open and exciting end to season 1.

Between the pandemic and strikes in Hollywood, the streaming platform had to judge that too much time had passed since the first season to offer a sequel to the adventures of Mildred Ratched, to the great dismay of fans. The series received great recognition, and was nominated for the prestigious Emmy Awards four times.

This is not the first recognized series canceled by Netflix. In 2023, the streaming platform prematurely ended 14 programs, including the costly Shadow and Bonebut also the series 1899, Uncoupled, Sex/Life, Glamorous And Agent Elvis.

In the age of streaming, there is little room for error and a show must find its audience quickly… otherwise it will come to an abrupt conclusion.

Rest assured, if you are a fan of the spirit of the series, you will be able to fill your sorrows with the next productions of the prolific Ryan Murphy. After a season 1 on Jeffrey Dahmer, the series Monster will be entitled to a second season, this time focusing on the Menéndez brothers. We are also waiting for season 2 of The Watcher and the next iterations ofAmerican Horror Story.

For her part, Sarah Paulson will once again play a character plagued by anxiety in the film Dust, where she plays a woman haunted by her past, and convinced that evil storms want to take her children away. A whole program, terrifying as hell.
