The solution isn’t the most complete or easy to use, but it’s a start.
Hey Netflix, when will there be a real feature to watch with others?
To (partially) compete with the GroupWatch features of Disney+ and Watch Party of Prime Video, allowing several users to watch the same program remotely in a synchronized way, Netflix has just launched a… Discord bot. The latter, dubbed “Hey Netflix”, can be installed by the administrators of a server in order to help the users who are there to choose a film or a series to watch more or less together.
To do this, just type the command /heynetflix in a channel. Each user then has ten seconds to indicate whether they want to see a film or a series and enter their country of residence. This allows the bot to only recommend works that are available to everyone based on catalog differences. Four recommendations are then displayed, with the possibility of requesting others. Finally, once the choice has been made, a text room (and not voice) is automatically created to be able to chat during the viewing without polluting or spoiling the other channels.
On the other hand, it is indeed only a recommendation bot here. The video is not broadcast within Discord, but to each user via Netflix. To synchronize the playback of the video between the participants, it will therefore be necessary to use tricks and communicate. The solution is therefore still far from what some of the competition offers.
