Accessibility options are good. Offering them everywhere is better. And this is finally the case for options related to the appearance of subtitles at Netflix!

The leading SVoD service is finally catching up with some of the competition on this subject.

Netflix on TV thinks about accessibility

A new option has just appeared in the TV versions of Netflix. Thanks to a simple toothed wheel at the bottom right of the navigation bar of a video (but not in the general options), it is finally possible to change the size and style of the subtitles on the fly.

This option has been accessible for a long time from the settings of the web version of the SVoD service, but it was high time to be able to play on this setting directly from your television. Especially since other services, like Prime Video, have been offering it for a long time. The example above is from the Android TV build on NVIDIA SHIELD.

A partial option, but welcome

In detail, it is possible to change the size of the subtitles (small, medium and large) and the style: drop shadow (classic white text), dark (white text on a black background), contrast (yellow text on a black background ) and clear (black text on a white background). A preview of the result is displayed above the buttons. The settings offered on the web version (which apply to all compatible devices on the account), however, offer more choices (fonts, shadows, colors, etc.).

Still, being able to change the appearance of subtitles on your TV on the fly without having to do it from your PC is definitely a good thing. The benefit for people with sight problems is obvious, while this option can be useful to adapt quickly to content that is too bright where reading normal subtitles can quickly become complex. The arrival of this tool on this medium (but not yet on mobile) is all the more a good thing since according to Netflix figures for 2018, 70% of its content is watched from a TV or an application connected to a TV.
