the streaming service published its monthly barometer analyzing the speeds offered by the various French ISPs. Do you have the right subscription to watch netflix in the best conditions ?

Connections to Netflix have long been a real problem for operators, who have had to deal with the explosion of French subscribers to the platform and their ever-increasing appetite for series and films.

A bandwidth-intensive activity that puts operators’ networks to the test

Some ISPs may have fared better than others, but on the whole, all have experienced some setbacks in providing service, especially during peak hours and especially after 9 p.m. The problem was also to be able to offer a reliable connection to their subscribers.

It has not been uncommon for many of us to wait very long seconds for a movie to play on the TV or computer, but also to see the video quality play yo-yo with losses speeds and coarse pixelation, often unworthy of what Netflix can offer in normal times.

To be transparent and give a more reliable indication to its loyal viewers, Netflix offers a monthly barometer comparing the various French ISPs and the latest, relating to the month of December, fell this week.

All operators on an equal footing

According to studies carried out by Netflix, the three operators, Orange, Bouygues Telecom and Free, offer the same average speed of 3.6 Mbit/s. This figure applies to both ADSL and Fiber connections. The latter, lagging behind SFR a few months ago, have apparently caught up.

As far as SFR is concerned, it is now better to take advantage of a fiber or cable connection for the last ones still equipped with a compatible box. On these two technologies, the operator in the red square is on a par with its competitors, with an average speed of 3.6 Mbit/s. For customers still connected to the good old ADSL network, the average speed drops slightly to 3.4 Mbit/s.

France is a good student and is at the same level as countries such as Germany, Italy or Japan, Australia and Ireland to name a few. However, it is slightly behind Belgium, South Korea, Spain and the United States, which have a better average speed of 3.8 Mbit/s. Despite everything, this is still enough to enjoy Netflix content on just about any device in good conditions.

The American service is not the most popular in the world for nothing. With an offer of content enriched each week, an always optimal video quality and a very worked user experience, the platform is an essential choice for entertainment. Our only regret remains the constant increase in subscription prices, which makes the service a little less attractive than when it was launched… Fortunately, the number of series and films compensates for this increase, even if the quality or the certainty of seeing arriving new seasons is not always there.
