Netflix: Is Enola Holmes 2 with Millie Bobby Brown and Henry Cavill better than the first?

Netflix puts Enola Holmes 2 online this Friday, still worn by Millie Bobby Brown. What did we think of it?

What is it about ?

Following in the footsteps of her famous brother, Enola Holmes tackles her first official case as a private detective! But as she sets out to find a missing girl, an explosive conspiracy uncovers a dangerous mystery that only the support of her friends (and Sherlock himself) will allow her to solve.

Who is it with?

Millie Bobby Brown once again slips into the costume of Enola Holmes, the little sister of the famous detective in this sequel. The young woman has lost none of her sense of deduction and her practice of jujitsu! She lends a hand (or is it the opposite?) to Sherlock Holmes aka Henry Cavill in a delicate matter. Exit Sam Claflin who does not resume his role of Mycroft but the matriarch played by Helena Bonham Carter makes a few appearances there.

Well worth a look ?

Millie Bobby Brown is Netflix’s goose. With her sympathy capital gained thanks to Stranger Things, the young actress was the ideal choice to play the fiery Enola Holmes in the adaptation of the eponymous novels by Nancy Springer. The first feature film released in 2020 and which was rather favorably received, is ranked among the most viewed Originals on the platform since its launch. All the lights were therefore green to make this sequel.

In Enola Holmes 2, our young heroine decides to move to town to start her business, after spending the entire first film looking for her mother. But who would agree to hire a woman who has not yet proven herself? The scenario written once again by Jack Thorne (The Eddy, His Dark Materials) does not lack spice and cachet. Still as feminist as the first and provided with strong characters, its screenplay is inspired by a true story, that of the first strike led by women in England in a match factory.

But what makes the strength of this second part is above all the on-screen chemistry between Millie Bobby Brown and Henry Cavill. The two actors make a solid team and their screen time together is much more important. The second is still as impeccable in his role as Sherlock Holmes, which shows a little more humanity – even if his scenes of deduction are not present enough for our taste! Enola Holmes 2 develops a little more the universe imagined by Arthur Conan Doyle by showing other very famous characters from the books.

Another regret of Enola Holmes 2: the film does not develop at all the character played by Helena Bonham Carter, who is only there to explode a few bombs and lend a hand to her daughter. The matriarch Holmes is clearly the red thread of the franchise (Netflix indeed wishes to make several films) and it will be necessary to wait for the sequel to know a little more about her intentions and the real reason for which she left her home. In Nancy Springer’s books, she disappeared to live the bohemian life, without ever meeting Enola again. The writers seem to have taken a totally different trackā€¦
