The complainant production company finally decided to withdraw its complaint for plagiarism, after three years of proceedings.

Stranger Things leaves the (not so) charming town of Hawkins for the American courts.

Author sues Netflix for plagiarism

If we have often been able to criticize one of Netflix’s most popular series for eyeing 80s cinema a little too much, with a very, and sometimes too much, tribute to the productions of this era, the author Jeffrey Kennedy did not hesitate to speak of plagiarism.

According to him, the series of the Duffer brothers shamelessly copied one of his scenarios, Totemwhich takes place in the 80s. The story of this project also has disturbing similarities with the Netflix show.

Totem indeed tells the story of a woman endowed with mysterious powers. She will then save the man she loves from a monster who transported him to an alternate dimension. Does this remind you of anything? It looks pretty much like the storyline of the first season, especially since the action is set in the 80s, in the city of South Bend, Indiana, and the story follows a band of determined friends in parallel. to save their comrade from this otherworldly creature.

An agreement reached between the two parties one month before the trial

Jeffrey Kenndy, through his company Irish Rover Entertainment, therefore decided in 2020 to sue Netflix and claim its share of the mountain of money generated by the various seasons of Stranger Things, the flagship series of the platform. In particular, he accuses an artist who produced concept art for Totem for sharing the visual with the creators of Stranger Thingswhich could have served as their inspiration.

Netflix and the Duffer brothers have on their side, and from the beginning of the case, denied all plagiarism of the work impregnated with ” native american imagery », which featured adults, where Stranger Things follows a group of children.

The trial was supposed to be held next September, but Irish Rover Entertainment has finally decided to withdraw its complaint. ” This lawsuit was completely without merit, and we are happy to be able to put it behind us. said Netflix in a statement. The company does not specify whether this agreement results from a financial arrangement between the two parties.

Fans can now calmly await the fifth and final season of the adventures of Eleven, with its fight against Vecna and the forces of evil determined to seize Hawkins. This latest round of episodes shouldn’t arrive until 2024 or 2025, depending on how far along the writers’ and actors’ strike is.

  • The most complete on the market
  • Often excellent original series
  • Impeccable video compression

The American service is not the most popular in the world for nothing. With an offer of content enriched each week, an always optimal video quality and a very worked user experience, the platform is an essential choice for entertainment. Our only regret remains the constant increase in subscription prices, which makes the service a little less attractive than when it was launched… Fortunately, the number of series and films compensates for this increase, even if the quality or the certainty of seeing arriving new seasons is not always there.
