Netflix has been investing a lot of money in local content for a long time. You do that on the one hand because you have to because of quotas, on the other hand because you also celebrate great success with foreign language content. The streaming giant has now presented numerous German-language productions.
Is it compulsion or a consequence of success? In any case, Netflix is obliged in the EU to offer a certain part of its productions in the respective national languages. The streaming giant also does this in other countries around the world and is quite successful with it. This is shown not only by the latest mega hits from Korea such as “Squid Game” and the new zombie spectacle “All of Us Are Dead”, but also by the German hit by critics and audiences “Dark”. All of these productions were also extremely popular in the USA, and this despite the fact that the majority of Americans detest subtitles.
New Netflix series
Netflix presented a large number of projects from German-speaking countries at an industry event today (via DWDL). The project that has been awaited with the greatest excitement has been known for a long time, namely “1899”. That’s the name of the Dark offshoot of Jantje Friese and Baran bo Odar.

But there was also a lot that was completely new at the presentation. “Achtsam Murder” is about a lawyer who accidentally becomes a murderer, while “Dear Child” is a story about the power of obsession – both are adaptations of novels.

Other series presented are “King of Stonks”, a story inspired by the “biggest economic scandal in German history”. “Kleo”, on the other hand, is about a Stasi killer, while “The Empress”, a reinterpretation of the story of Empress Elisabeth and Emperor Franz Joseph, gets historical. Also new: “Totenfrau”, “Neumatt” and a second season of “Barbarians”.
New Netflix Movies
In addition, Netflix is also preparing German-language films, the focus here is also on history: “Blood and Gold” takes place in the Second World War and is about a German deserter who is looking for his daughter, but is also drawn into the search for a Jewish pot of gold.
“Nothing New in the West” is the film adaptation of the world-famous anti-war novel of the same name by Erich Maria Remarque. Buba is a film spin-off from the How to Sell Drugs Online (Fast) series, which also includes Faraway and Paradise.
