Netflix releases the trailer for Reptile, a True Detective thriller starring Benicio Del Toro, Justin Timberlake and Alicia Silverstone without warning

As if nothing had happened, Netflix is releasing a simple trailer for “Reptile”, a film that may well be the most exciting project of the fall.

Announced without drums and without trumpets, the back-to-school thriller on Netflix is very desirable. Both for its cast and for its True Detective atmosphere. Entitled Reptile, it features Benicio Del Toro as a police officer in charge of an unusual murder case.

Just weeks away from the film’s premiere at TIFF (the Toronto International Film Festival), the first trailer offers a first look at the envy-inducing feature film with its mournful tone.

This seemingly sinister and twisting crime thriller marks the film debut of music video director Grant Singer. Alicia Silverstone stars as Del Toro’s wife who supports him in his investigation. As for Justin Timberlake, he is the suitor of a recent victim. And yes, he may know more than he’s letting on about the circumstances of his girlfriend’s murder.

Here is the official synopsis:

Following the brutal murder of a young real estate agent, a hardened detective tries to lift the veil on a case with deceptive appearances, and loses his own illusions.

What follows is a kind of giant puzzle to put together, with tight close-ups and cryptic imagery. We’re also treated to a lighter moment, when the cops sit around the table and bet on the culprit. Is it the boyfriend, the girlfriend, the creepy stranger or the ex-husband?

The somewhat sticky atmosphere of this trailer brings together several references known to moviegoers and seriesgoers alike. We think of True Detective as well as Nocturnal Animals, or even The Silence of the Lambs.

Reptile also marks the first on-screen collaboration between Silverstone and Del Toro since 1997’s Excess Baggage, a romantic thriller where she played a wealthy young girl who faked her own kidnapping and him, a petty criminal.

See you on October 6 on Netflix to discover Reptile.
