“Squid Game” ensures strong quarterly figures for Netflix. Thanks to the surprise South Korean success, the forecasts are exceeded.

The streaming service Netflix can look forward to a strong increase in customers. As the company announced, the number of subscribers worldwide rose in the third quarter by 4.4 million to around 214 million users. The company’s internal forecast was exceeded by around 0.9 million. Net profit also increased by 80 percent to 1.25 billion euros compared to the same period in the previous year, and revenues climbed by 16 percent.

“Squid Game” is to blame for this

Experts believe that the surprise hit “Squid Game” is primarily responsible for this development. The first nine episodes of the South Korean series were released worldwide on September 17, 2021. After four weeks, the series was already being viewed by around 111 million accounts, according to Netflix. This broke the record of “Bridgerton” (82 million).

The development is far from over: In the last quarter of 2021, Netflix expects 8.5 million more paying customers. The reason for this is, on the one hand, the persistent effects of “Squid Game”. But also several blockbusters to be released in the next few weeks and months. Among other things, the comedy “Don’t look up” with the Hollywood superstars Jennifer Lawrence (31) and Leonardo DiCaprio (46).
