Everyone has their own selection of “guilty pleasures” from bad movies that they like. We’ve picked out a few nuggets of gold on Netflix that are so bad you’ll be sure to delete them from your history once they’re done. This choice is of course subjective.

The Cloverfield Paradox (2018)

The third film in the “Cloverfield” film series takes place on a spaceship. Its crew tries to generate energy in space with a particle accelerator in order to prevent the third world war in the world. However, when the earthlings destroy themselves and a strange astronaut appears on the spaceship, the crew has to fear for their lives.

The director JJ Abrams (“Star Wars”) presented the two predecessors “Cloverfield” and “10 Cloverfield Lane” properly. So the disappointment about the third part of the thriller-mystery series is all the greater. The plot gradually becomes more and more unrealistic and arbitrary. However, when coherence and logic are not so important, The Cloverfield Paradox can make for mindless entertainment.

365 Days (2020)

A young woman wakes up one day on a mafia boss’s yacht. Massimo, who is part of the Sicilian mafia family, gives Laura 365 days to fall in love with him. However, she is kept captive by him all year round.

Feminists beware! We’re already used to a lot from the “50 Shades of Gray” flicks in terms of dominance and sex. But 365 Days ups the ante: The production is similar to amateur films, the storyline is exaggerated and the sex scenes pejorative. Despite this, or perhaps because of this, the film caused a sensation: the somewhat different form of “Guilty Pleasure”.

The Kissing Booth (2018)

Elle (Joey King, “Bullet Train”) has her first kiss with Noah (Jacob Elordi, “Euphoria”), the hottest guy in high school, of all people. However, she has to keep the romance a secret. Noah is the big brother of her very best friend Lee. With Elle and Lee vowing not to date relatives, their friendship threatens to fall apart.

“The Kissing Booth” has two sequels to date and has been remarkably successful on Netflix. Neither the characters nor the plot are that special. But that’s exactly why this teen flick is just the thing for some light entertainment on a girls’ night out.

In a dystopian scenario, a bank robber seeks one last heist before the government deploys a mind-altering signal designed to stop crime forever.

“The Last Days of American Crime” is an ideal “guilty pleasure”. For over two and a half hours you can watch the characters in exaggerated and brutal fight scenes in an illogical storyline. Simply turning off your head and letting yourself be sprinkled around is no problem here – unless you have a problem with the extremely long playing time.

Death Note (2017)

One day, high school student Light Turner (Nat Wolff, “The Consultant”) stumbles upon a notebook with special abilities. With its help, he can kill anyone. At first he uses this ability to fight crime, but he quickly goes astray.

Netflix has already proven its skills with a number of live-action adaptations of successful anime. That can’t be confirmed with “Death Note” though. Although the cast of Nat Wolff, Lakeith Stanfield (“Atlanta”, “Haunted Mansion”), Willem Dafoe (“Asteroid City”) and Margaret Qualley (“Maid”) is impressive, the storyline leaves a lot to be desired. This fantasy horror thriller can’t compete with Japanese adaptations.

Fatal Affair (2020)

The marriage of lawyer Ellie (Nia Long, “Fresh Air Freshener”) and her husband Marcus (Stephen Bishop, “The Equalizer”) is on the brink after he suffers a serious car accident. Trying to distract herself, Ellie meets up for drinks with former classmate David (Omar Epps, “Dr. House”). She quickly realizes that this meeting will have devastating consequences, because David develops an obsession.

“Fatal Affair” is a profane thriller that makes use of all the clichés of this genre. But sometimes it might just need that: a predictable plot, flat characters and melodramatics for shallow entertainment.
