In the 80s and 90s, Mel Gibson was at the height of his popularity thanks to the Lethal Weapon saga and the western Maverick, where he played characters both charming and badass. Films which have undoubtedly overshadowed a little-known work by the Australian star, released at the same time and which is generally in the same vein, oscillating between lightness and breathless adventures: Like a bird on the plugged.
Available on Netflix, the action comedy Like a bird on the branch tells the story of Rick (Gibson), once a key witness in a drug trafficking case and who was therefore placed under the protection of the FBI. But one day, the men he sent to prison find their freedom, determined to get revenge. Rick will then run away and hide with his former girlfriend (Goldie Hawn).
Directed by John Badham, to whom we owe Saturday Night Fever and the excellent The Strong Manner with Michael J. Fox and James Woods, Like a Bird on a Branch is a little delight of entertainment. Funny and lively, the film is a perfect playground for Mel Gibson, whose XXL energy and histrionics carry the piece away in an irresistible way.
In this action comedy which still leans more towards comedy (sometimes schoolboy) than action, the duo that Mel Gibson forms with the too rare Goldie Hawn works perfectly. It’s hard to resist this feel-good movie that flies by like a gust of wind…
