The end of an electric dream, this manufacturer abandons its customers and their electric cars


Until a few months ago, Fisker was considered one of the most promising automakers of the new generation of electric cars. But today, the company is bankrupt and can no longer provide customer support and maintenance of its vehicles.

It’s both scary and exciting to see an automaker disappear because it shows how much the auto industry is changing and how difficult it is to succeed in this industry.

Fisker, an American electric car manufacturer, is going bankrupt. The company has no more money and discussions with potential buyers seem complicated. This situation has direct consequences for Fisker employees and customers, who now have to deal with the cessation of roadside assistance and maintenance of their vehicles.

But how did we get there? Why is Fisker, which was considered one of the most promising automakers of the new generation of electric cars, now finding itself bankrupt?

Don’t buy the Fisker Ocean anymore

The Fisker Ocean could have been the car of the year. With its very attractive technical sheet and its excellent quality / autonomy / price ratio. So much so that it had nothing (or almost) to envy, on paper, of the Tesla Model Y. The best-selling car of the year 2023, all engines combined. Yes, but that was in theory. In practice, as we saw during our two tests (in the summer of 2023 then at the beginning of 2024), the car suffered from very annoying bugs.

These bugs are ultimately nothing compared to the situation in which Fisker, Henrik Fisker’s company, finds itself. We knew that bankruptcy was fast approaching for the American company which sells its electric cars in Europe, and particularly in France.

Serious consequences

The consequences of Fisker’s bankruptcy are disastrous for the company’s employees and customers. The first will lose their jobs. The latter, meanwhile, find themselves with electric cars that are no longer covered by Fisker roadside assistance and maintenance. Fisker has just informed its customers: it’s over from May 4, 2024.

First, customers will no longer receive roadside assistance and maintenance from Fisker, meaning they will have to pay out of pocket to repair and maintain their vehicle. This can be very costly, especially if production or quality issues arise.

Then the resale value of the Fisker Ocean is likely to drop significantly. This means that owners will struggle to resell their car at a reasonable price, which can be a problem if they want to part with it.

Finally, there is a risk that spare parts for the Fisker Ocean will become rare and difficult to find, particularly if the company cannot find a buyer. This can make car repair and maintenance even more difficult and expensive.
