Netflix with ads: a slow but satisfying start?

Two months after a start in semolina, the subscription “Essential with advertising” of netflix finally seems to be paying off.

The cheaper formula priced at 5.99 euros per month, but with four to five minutes of advertising per hour of viewing, would indeed have recorded growth with which the streaming platform would be satisfied.

Essential Growth

Launched at the beginning of last November, Netflix’s new discounted subscription has not really been seen with a very good eye. While the advertisements are legion and invite themselves more and more in the video streaming, the mistrust towards him was quite natural.

At its inception, the formula thus represented timidly 9% of total subscribers in the United States, well below the minimum 20% required. A kind of wet firecracker which thus forced the platform to return money to advertisers.

However, the service considers itself satisfied with the growth experienced by the Essential subscription with advertising, as well as the variety of advertisers who have answered its call. What Netflix does not tell us, however, is the numbers for this growth. We must therefore take its representatives at their word.

A two-speed formula

If all seems to be going well for the SVoD platform, recent developments tend to attenuate this state of affairs. Between a strong loss of subscribers, in particular encouraged by its fight against account sharing, or even productions blowing sometimes hot, sometimes cold, Netflix seems to be losing ground.

We also learned very recently that the service had lost its 1e place on the podium in the United States, for the benefit of Amazon Prime Video. The American giant was probably counting on this new, cheaper formula to revive the machine. Despite the satisfactory advanced growth, it seems that it is still too early to comment on the success of the maneuver.

Especially since the Essential subscription with advertising comes with limited access to the service’s vast catalog, due to licensing issues. The company is said to be renegotiating the agreements in question, but wishes to reassure that “ a great majority » content is accessible via this formula.
