Netflix with advertising: the streaming giant will reimburse advertisers

A month after the launch of its “with advertisements” package – cheaper, but with advertisements at the beginning and in the middle of the programs – Netflix is doing the accounts … and they are not good. So much so that the streaming platform has decided to reimburse advertisers whose ads have not yet aired.

Barely 80% of the announced objective

According to employees of the streaming service, the famous “Netflix with advertising” subscription – offered at €5.99/month instead of €8.99 – has not even reached 80% of the announced objective. The number of subscribers likely to see the advertisements of the platform’s advertisers being insufficient, Netflix was forced to offer a refund during the holiday season.

“The numbers are well below expectations, and some advertisers have been reclaiming their money so they can spend it elsewhere during this critical Christmas holiday period. […] Netflix agreed”said an advertiser. “They can’t keep their promises. They don’t have enough results to keep them. So they literally give the money back”.

While some advertisers prefer to take back their stake to reinject it elsewhere at Christmas, others have asked Netflix to shift their investments to the beginning of 2023, in the hope of reaching a wider audience.

Not very glorious results for the service, but which in no way bury the principle of a package with advertising, still in its infancy in the world of video streaming platforms. The prevailing general feeling is that this new model still has to make its way, and slowly become part of consumer habits. This should be facilitated by the arrival of a Disney+ subscription with advertising in France during 2023.
