Netherlands-Six people killed, mowed down by a truck

AMSTERDAM, Aug 28 (Reuters) – Six people were killed on Saturday evening when a truck hit them during a block party in the southern Dutch town of Nieuw Beijerland, according to a new report provided on Sunday by the Dutch police.

Seven other people were hospitalized on Sunday morning, including one in critical condition, police said.

The incident happened around 6 p.m. (4 p.m. GMT) about 30 km (19 miles) south of Rotterdam, when a lorry rolled over and came to an end in a field where neighbors were having a party.

Police said the causes of the accident were not yet clear. The driver of the truck, a 46-year-old man from Spain, was taken into custody.

A spokesman for the employer, Spanish transport company El Mosca, told Spanish newspaper La Verdad that the driver ran off the road after trying to avoid a collision with a van. (Bart Meijer report; French version Jean-Michel Blot)
