Retirement of ski star Braathen shocks his team

Young ski star Lucas Braathen abruptly announces his immediate departure – and thus causes strong reactions. The Norwegian association reacts with sadness, it is a “shock” for the teammates. And then there is Felix Neureuther and his special marriage proposal.

The surprising resignation of Norway’s skiing hope Lucas Braathen is sending the sports world into turmoil. The 23-year-old young star, one of the scene’s most dazzling figures, announced his immediate departure at a press conference in Sölden – and the Norwegian association reacted immediately. Tove Moe Dyrhaug, the president, told the Norwegian newspaper Dagbladet: “This is sad news that surprised us all, and I deeply regret that Lucas has come to this conclusion. At the same time, we can only respect his decision.”

However, the president did not address Braathen’s allegations. The ski professional said that the association had “treated him disrespectfully” and that was why he had to say goodbye. The dispute was about personal and marketing rights after Braathen advertised a Swedish clothing brand that was not one of the Norwegians’ official suppliers.

Norwegian sporting director Claus Ryste told reporters in Sölden he felt there had been a good dialogue with Lucas and his father recently. Now we want to take care of Lucas and hope that he is doing well.” Braathen’s teammate Aleksander Aamodt Kilde told the “Dagbladet”: “It was a shock for us. I didn’t see that coming.”

The ski world also reacted to the resignation online. Numerous companions commented on the Norwegian’s farewell post on Instagram. Felix Neureuther in particular attracted attention. The former German ski professional wrote: “I can’t believe it! If it’s because of the federation, I would marry you and then you can compete for Germany. My wife would be completely okay with that.” The same person, former top biathlete Miriam Neureuther, commented on Braathen’s video with crying emojis and wrote: If Braathen doesn’t want to get married, the family could adopt him, another child would be great.

Johan Clarey, former French ski racer, commented: “You can’t do that!!! People like you are so important to our sport, I hope it’s not final. The system has to change but it’s a big loss for them ski racing world.” Clarey’s teammate Julien Lizeroux bowed to the strong will: “Freedom in its fullest form. You are the true king, Lucas.”
