The new miniseries “Expats” with Nicole Kidman starts on January 26th. It is a project close to the heart of the Hollywood star.

Hollywood superstar Nicole Kidman (56) is once again playing one of the leading roles in an ambitious miniseries based on an internationally acclaimed novel. The six-part miniseries “Expats”, which will be available on Amazon Prime Video from January 26th, takes its viewers to Hong Kong and is about the titular US emigrants, who couldn’t be more different – and whose fates are nevertheless closely linked.

Three destinies become one: that’s what it’s all about

Hong Kong in 2014: At first glance, the wealthy Margaret (Kidman) and her husband Clarke (Brian Tee, 46) lack nothing. But all the money in the world cannot erase the pain that the American has felt since one of her children disappeared without a trace almost a year ago.

Her neighbor and friend Hilary (Sarayu Blue, 48) also originally comes from the USA and is far from privately happy – her marriage is hanging by a thread. When Margaret suddenly comes face to face with Korean-American Mercy (Ji-young Yoo, 22) during her husband’s birthday party, the lives of all three women begin to fall apart.

Kidman has been working on it for years

“Expats”, the colloquial English expression for emigrants, comes from Lulu Wang (40) and is based on the bestseller “The Expatriates” by Janice YK Lee (52). The fact that Kidman is personally convinced of the material is shown by the fact that her in-house production company Blossom Films had already secured the rights to it in 2017.

This was already the case with the successful series “Big Little Lies”. This drama series is also based on the bestselling novel by an author (Liane Moriarty, 57), was co-produced by Blossom Films and was originally designed as a miniseries. But the success of the first season meant that another season was postponed around two years later – and according to plans, there will also be a third.

Whether “Expats” will also be promoted from a miniseries to a regular series will be shown by the response to the first six episodes. The first two will be available via Prime Video from January 26th, followed by a new episode every week.
