TF1 is broadcasting the last episode of season 5 of “New Amsterdam” this Wednesday evening. A moving final episode which will allow fans of the medical series to say goodbye to Dr Goodwin and his colleagues.
Warning, the following paragraphs contain spoilers for the last episode of New Amsterdam. If you don’t want to know anything, move on!
The time to say goodbye has come for Dr. Max Goodwin. After five years of good and loyal service, the doctor played by Ryan Eggold is preparing to leave his coat in the locker room for good. This Wednesday, December 21 from 12:35 a.m., TF1 viewers will be able to watch the final episode of the fifth and final season of New Amsterdam.

Max says goodbye to New Amsterdam
At the beginning of this final episode entitled “We can all help you“, Max delivers a speech in front of the entire hospital and remembers the moment he first heard the words: “How can I help ?“. He also specifies that it was this question that inspired him to become a doctor. He also remembers saying this sentence on his first day here. Max then asks the assembly of doctors to always keep in mind mind the moment their vocation appeared…
He closes shortly after his intervention by indicating that it is in fact his last day! Max is indeed leaving for Geneva to join the WHO. As he leaves to take his little daughter, Luna, to see a parade, he is detained to take care of a patient whose difficult case requires 53 caregivers, including Dr. Cassian Shin…
Once Max and his teams rescue this woman from Ukraine, Max has a talk with Wilder before leaving New York behind. He explains to her that he must make Luna the center of his life and that he must therefore turn away from what he loves… including her, therefore. The two lovers end their relationship but the door remains open for their relationship. If he comes back one day, maybe she will be available? Max leaves the scene with a smile and Luna in his arms. The little girl observes the hospital, and those who devote their lives there, while falling asleep…
Bloom, Reynolds, Iggy and Martin find happiness
At the same time, Bloom begins a new life in an apartment of her own. She is determined to be in control of her future. Later, Vanessa, her addict sister, arrives at a meeting of Addicts Anonymous. She then finds Lauren here and they both hold hands, hoping to repair their very damaged relationship.
For his part, Reynolds, who has always wanted to find love and have a happy family, finally gets what he wants. In his last scenes, we see him attending a meal alongside Gabrielle, the nurse, and his father, also seated around the table. Iggy and Martin, for their part, finally remarry after divorcing at the start of the season! Gladys officiates at the ceremony with only their children as guests.
Luna in Max’s footsteps
Finally, throughout the episode, viewers meet a young woman who arrives in New Amsterdam. She’s the new director and she seems very excited to be working here now, in Max’s position.
At the end of the episode it is revealed that this stranger is none other than… Luna! Fans then discover Max’s child in the future, who has become a doctor like her father and director of the hospital… like her father. She gives her first speech in front of her colleagues and confides to them that she understood that she wanted to practice the same profession as Max when he couldn’t take her to the famous parade years ago…
She states: “That day I understood how hard he worked to save a life. And how everyone worked together. I realized that New Amsterdam didn’t take my father away from me. The hospital defined my father. Who he was, who I could be. I understood that I wanted to become like him. So I start this job by asking you what my father asked his staff every day: ‘How can I help?’” The circle is complete.
