New Apple Glass Rumors: Pancakes and AMOLED

A few days ago we reported about the new PR manager at Apple and a possible publication period for Apple Glass. Now Kuo is spreading another rumor in which the analyst assumes that an official presentation can be expected as early as the end of 2022. In addition to a promising release date, Kuo also mentions an innovative lens technology.

  • A new rumor about the Apple AR / VR headset assumes a release in early 2023.
  • Special “pancake lenses” are supposed to be used in the headset.
  • According to analyst Ross Young, three different screens are to be installed in the Apple View.

With the move of the head of AR communication Andrea Schubert from Meta to Apple, the rumor mill began to boil around a possible release date of the mixed reality headset. Now the Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo has also spoken out and supports the speculation that the Apple Glass – or Apple View – will most likely be presented after the end of 2022. Delivery of the headset is scheduled to begin as early as the beginning of 2023.

In a report by TF International Securities, there was also talk of the fact that “3D pancake lenses” could be built into the Apple Glass. The advantage of these lenses should be that light is reflected through a curve between the lenses and the display. This peculiarity could bring Apple a decisive advantage in the design, which should be particularly compact and light.

Two OLED screens and one AMOLED display in Apple Glass?

The drawing of The information shows one possible appearance of the Apple View. In addition to a rounded front, you can also see an exchangeable holder and a soft protective material on the glasses themselves. The picture was published in early 2021 and is being traded as a realistic concept for Apple Glass.

Ross Young, CEO of Display Supply Chain Consultants (DSCC), fueled the rumor mill a few days ago with information about the displays of the headset. According to his information, two OLED displays and an AMOLED screen will be used.

While OLED is well suited for VR headsets due to the high possible pixel density, the use of AMOLED panels is surprising. As MacRumors speculates, the AMOLED panel with a lower pixel density could be used more for displays in the peripheral field of view.

In December 2021, Sony presented new prototypes for two 4K OLED displays at its in-house Technology Day. According to Young, it’s entirely possible that these displays were designed specifically for Apple. If this is true, the resolution of 4,000 x 4,000 pixels would be very high. In contrast to Kuo, however, Young claims that a presentation of the headset would take place at Apple’s WWDC in June 2022.

The analysts agree on the price

Even if the analysts do not always agree, everyone agrees on the price. The Apple View should be published for “several thousand dollars”. Both Young and Kuo assume a starting price of around $ 3,000. As before, both statements are rumors.

The year 2022 should therefore be very exciting for everyone who is interested in Apple Glass and it remains to be seen which rumors will come true and who will be wrong.
