Oscar category for casting will be introduced in 2025

The Oscar Academy will award a trophy for best performance in casting for the first time starting in 2025, it was announced today.
The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, which is responsible for the Oscars, will introduce a completely new Oscar category starting next year. Like, among other things The industry magazine “Variety” reports that starting at the 97th Academy Awards in 2025, an Oscar will also be awarded for “Best Casting” in a film. This is the first time since 2002 that there has been a new category at the Oscars.

“Casting directors play an essential role in filmmaking,” said the Oscar Academy about the innovation. Now they are “proud to add casting to the disciplines we recognize and honor.” The last time a new Oscar category was introduced was over 21 years ago. At the 74th Academy Awards in 2002, the iconic film “Shrek: The Daring Hero” received the Golden Boy for “Best Animated Film” for the first time.
Filmmakers in the area of casting had been advocating for a separate Oscar category since the late 1990s – so far without success. After the innovation that has now taken place at the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, stunt people may also be hoping for their own Oscar.
