Lauterbach declares school closures a taboo

The corona measures in the Infection Protection Act will expire at the end of September. Within the traffic light, there is a struggle for successor requirements. An agreement is imminent. Part of the package will be the explicit waiver of school closures.
In the future measures in the fight against Corona, school closures should be excluded. This possibility “will no longer exist,” said Federal Health Minister Karl Lauterbach on ARD. Minister of Justice Marco Buschmann had previously rejected school closures. The two ministers are currently working on the new Infection Protection Act; the current regulations expire at the end of September.
According to Lauterbach, he doesn’t think it’s a good thing when reports are made from ongoing negotiations. When it comes to school closures, however, he wants to make an exception. The talks about the new Infection Protection Act would “soon be concluded,” he assured. However, he did not want to give a specific date.
“We will really have what we need,” emphasized Lauterbach at the same time. “A very good package” will be put together for the fall. “Many further measures are planned”, also for different scenarios that the federal states and partly also the federal government could use. In addition to the containment measures, this also included updating the vaccination strategy and better data collection in the hospitals. He is working “intensively” on the pandemic policy and has therefore not taken any vacation so far, said Lauterbach.
Both ministers are negotiating follow-up regulations for the Corona provisions in the Infection Protection Act, which expire on September 23. They are the legal basis for measures in the federal states and name possible instruments. By spring, the provisions had been greatly reduced. This eliminated general mask requirements for events or when shopping, as did access rules such as 2G or 3G.
