In 2024, the ecological bonus evolves, integrating new environmental criteria. The government has published the list of models which meet these requirements and remain eligible for this financial assistance.

The ecological bonus, a French system aimed at encouraging the purchase of low-emission vehicles, is undergoing a major transformation in 2024. Initially focused on greenhouse gas emissions during vehicle use, the bonus will now take into account the total carbon impact, including production and assembly. This development is part of a government approach aimed at reducing the overall ecological footprint of vehicles.

Current bonus

The ecological bonus is now accessible to individuals residing in France, for the purchase or rental of new vehicles registered in the country for a minimum period of two years. Eligibility criteria include a CO2 emission rate of 0 g/km, a price of less than 47,000 euros and a total mass of less than 2.4 tonnes. This aid is 5,000 euros and can be increased to 7,000 euros for households whose reference tax income per share is equal to or less than 14,089 euros.

Ecological bonus from January 1, 2024

From 2024, the rules for awarding the bonus will evolve to favor vehicles manufactured in Europe, with particular attention paid to
CO2 emissions generated during vehicle production.

The bonus will now depend on an environmental score which is based mainly on the following criteria:

  • The model of the vehicle and its number of seats
  • The assembly location
  • The volume and weight of the materials used
  • Battery characteristics
  • Routing and distance traveled between the production site and the distribution location

The list of electric car models eligible for the ecological bonus

If the government has provided us with the list of all versions, we have simplified it for you here by grouping the vehicles by brand:

  • Abarth: 500th
  • Audi: Q4
  • BMW: i4*, iX1, iX2
  • Citroën: ë-C4, ë-C4 X, ë-Berlingo
  • Cupra: Born
  • DS:DS3
  • Fiat: 500e, 600e, Ulysse, Doblo
  • Hyundai: Kona
  • Jeep: Avenger
  • Mercedes: EQA, EQB, EQT
  • Mazda: MX-30
  • Mini: Mini
  • Nissan: Leaf, Townstar
  • Opel: Corsa, Astra, Mokka, Combo, Zafira
  • Peugeot: 208, 2008, 308, 3008, Rifter, Expert
  • Renault: Twingo, Zoé, Mégane, Scénic, Kangoo
  • Skoda: Enyaq, Enyaq Coupe
  • Smart: Fortwo
  • Tesla: Model Y
  • Toyota: ProAce City Verso
  • Volkswagen: Up!, ID.3, ID.4, ID.5, ID.7
  • Volvo: C40, XC40

Some models like the BMW or the ID.7 exceed 47,000 euros, but this list initially only corresponds to the environmental score. And, the allocation of the bonus does not take into account possible discounts and vehicle options.

As you can also see, the bonus is over for the Dacia Spring, the Tesla Model 3 or even the MG4. Some will see this as welcome protectionism, others will regret that these popular models, which contribute to the development of electric vehicles, are deprived of it. The list will grow over time since cars like the R5 E-Tech or the Citroën ë-C3 are not yet in it.
