New Golf R “20 years”: the anniversary model of the VW sports car soon available

To celebrate the 20th anniversary of the Golf R, Volkswagen is launching the Golf R “20 years”, an exclusive special edition. The limited production period of approximately one year makes this special model a collector’s item as soon as it rolls off the production line.

The “20-year-old” Golf R surpasses anything launched with the “Golf” label so far. The anniversary model accelerates from 0 to 100 km/h in just 4.6 seconds: the top speed is electronically limited to 270 km/h. It has 333 hp delivered by the 2.0-liter four-cylinder turbo engine.

The Golf R “20 years” is equipped as standard with the “R-Performance” package.

During manual shifting of S and S+ gears, the dual-clutch DSG gearbox and the transmission send haptic feedback each time the Golf R “20 years” paddle is pressed.

The optimized engine tuning also enables particularly spontaneous gear changes. The turbocharger is constantly maintained at a certain rpm, even during part-load operation, so as to release power more quickly on re-acceleration.

The open thrust throttle actuator also contributes to improved dynamics and on-road performance. When the user releases the accelerator pedal and actuates it again, this allows a faster increase in engine torque and significantly improves engine behavior. The “20-year-old” Golf R is thus even more stable and dynamic during sporty driving.

The Golf R

The Golf R “20 years” is the 5th edition of the very sporty Golf R.

The “20-year-old” Golf R is equipped as standard with the “R-Performance” package, already present on the Golf 8 R (such as R-Performance Torque Vectoring in combination with the dynamic behavior manager and two additional “Special and “Drift”).

This new model is equipped with equipment with an exclusive design. At the rear, the roof spoiler underlines the style of the motorsport vehicle. The “20 Years” Golf R is fitted with 19″ “Estoril” light-alloy wheels as standard. Like all Golf models, the “20 Years” Golf R is produced at the factory in Wolfsburg, the home of the Golf. It will be offered in various European markets, in a few international markets and in North America.

The “20-year-old” Golf R is the 5th edition of the very sporty Golf R. The success story began in 2002 with the Golf R32 and its 241 hp (177 kW) 3.2-litre 6-cylinder engine. It was then the most powerful Golf ever produced by Volkswagen. With its all-wheel drive combined with its exclusive design and equipment, this sports car was a benchmark in its segment. The Golf R32 was an immediate success, and its sales were three times higher than planned.
