Easier and cheaper than before
Roland Peterhans explains that it was just a lot more cumbersome so far: “In the past, people had to go to the court, file an application there and so on. Now that’s all gone. People come by, make the declaration and in fifteen minutes the whole thing is done. “
In addition, the change will be significantly cheaper. Starting next year, it will cost 75 francs instead of several hundred or even 1,000 francs as before. As before, men who change their gender entry do not have to join the army or retire earlier.
The Federal Office of Justice does not expect abuse
There is no fear of abuse at the Federal Office of Justice (FOJ). Michel Montini, a lawyer at the FOJ, says that such cases are not known, neither abroad nor in Switzerland: “You have to imagine: If you suddenly have to live as a woman, in everyday life, with employer, landlord and so on – that is not easy.”
Incidentally, whether there could be another official gender expression in the future is currently the subject of a report that the Federal Council will present next year.
