It is to the greatest indifference that the film Quiz Lady is released this Friday, November 3 on Disney+. This American comedy was originally to be produced by Netflix before the SVOD giant handed over to Disney. Imagined by Jen d’Angelo, to whom we notably owe Hocus Pocus 2 (the most viewed film on this same platform), this film is an unpretentious little entertainment which focuses on its two headliners.

A rising star in American comedy for several years, rapper/actress Awkwafina plays opposite the beloved Sandra Oh, but also Will Ferrell, Holland Taylor, Tony Hale and Jason Schwartzman. The former star of Grey’s Anatomy has had a series of projects in recent years. Since the end of the excellent Killing Eve, she doesn’t seem to have found something that matches her standards.

And let it be said with Quiz Lady, the actress is clearly there to have fun, not to show off her talents. Her forty-year-old character is a pastiche of failed pseudo-actresses who never managed to make a career. With her false nails, false eyelashes and colorful hair additions, Sandra Oh is unrecognizable. But she does not forget, even in a joking tone, to campaign to denounce anti-Asian racism.

Don’t expect a comedy where you’re going to get hairy. Quiz Lady mainly talks to us about family and the failed relationship between two sisters. Deja vu in short. The last quarter of the film still raises the bar and brings a little feel-good side to the whole thing.
