Fifteen years ago, you could sail in a week from Venice to Istanbul, with MSC Cruises. For ecological reasons, this is no longer possible. “It’s too long a distance to cover in such a short time, explains Patrick Pourbaix, managing director of the shipowner in France. Today, the routes are half as long. Ships go slower and stop at night to reduce pollution at sea.”
After years of racing for gigantism, the cruise industry is playing its reputation and its future in its ability to reduce its environmental footprint. Under fire from critics, XXL liners pollute, both at quay and at sea. Vis-à-vis public opinion, the media, public authorities and their customers, shipowners must quickly find solutions and make it known.
