New jobless claims: recovery in US job market stalled

While the corona infections are increasing in the USA, the unemployment figures are shooting up again shortly before the election. In the past week alone, 898,000 people registered as unemployed. Experts are now hoping for an aid package – but that may take time.

In the USA the number of unemployed registrations has risen significantly again. As announced by the Department of Labor in Washington, 898,000 people registered as unemployed last week. That was 53,000 new registrations more than in the previous week, when 845,000 new claims for unemployment benefit were registered.

The new figures show how bumpy the economic recovery in the Corona crisis is. Unemployment in the USA rose sharply in the spring, but it gradually declined again after the corona protective measures were relaxed. Hundreds of thousands of people are still losing their jobs week after week; at the same time, many industries are being discontinued. As a result, the unemployment rate has been falling for months. It was last at 6.8 percent.

Hope for aid package is waning

Experts consider a new aid package for the battered economy to be urgently needed. The administration of President Donald Trump and the opposition Democrats have been arguing for months about a new economic stimulus package. Trump declared the talks broken last week, but then turned around. So far, however, there has been no sign of an agreement, and the prospects for an aid package before the presidential election on November 3rd are dwindling.

At the same time, the number of corona infections in the USA is currently increasing again significantly. More than 7.9 million infections have already been confirmed in the country and more than 216,000 people have died. These are the highest numbers in the world. US experts are concerned that it will not be possible to get the spread of the virus under control – especially as the flu season is starting.
