New measuring station – weather data now comes directly from the city

The new and modern measuring system at Graz’s Lendplatz now provides even more precise weather data and climate information directly from the center of the city.

They are enthroned at a dizzy height of 36 meters and give a realistic picture of urban conditions: the modern devices of the new weather measuring station at the Graz professional fire brigade on Lendplatz. The new system has literally outgrown itself, on Monday the location in the inner-city area was opened by Deputy Mayor Judith Schwentner, Fire Director Klaus Baumgartner and Alexander Podesser from Geosphere and the city’s HIS (Climate Information System) team. Yesterday, the temperature reports from Geosphere came from the middle of the busy city center for the first time. Precise information The advantage of the measuring station at Lendplatz is that it is not surrounded by green areas or meadows and can therefore provide the Graz population with more precise data on temperatures, wind speeds, radiation and precipitation. Previously, the weather data came from the stations on the Graz University campus, Graz Airport and from the Straßgang district.Este station built 170 years agoFirst evaluations of the air temperature by GeoSphere clearly show that higher temperatures are measured throughout the day than at the station University of Graz. Incidentally, the first measuring station in Graz was set up there around 170 years ago, and 70 weather stations in the provincial capital are currently providing climate-related data. Even extreme weather events can now be predicted faster and people can be warned better.
