new mode removes personalized suggestions

The Google TV interface is evolving. A new mode is now accessible with version 6.0.16 of the interface launcher for connected television. This mode removes personalized suggestions and focuses on installed apps. Access to the search engine and Assistant also disappear, leaving only installed apps and a few ads.

Google has worked a lot in recent months on the version of Android dedicated to Chromecast, connected televisions and digital decoders. For example, we reported a month ago in our columns the arrival of 800 channels completely free for users. The content is funded by advertising that is displayed during viewing. Even if it does not present content as popular as on Netflix, Disney+ or Apple TV+, these channels have the merit of bringing additional programs to those who do not want to pay a subscription.

Content isn’t the only element of Google TV the firm is working on. There is also the organization of this content in the interface. If access to all applications, especially the Play Store, is not yet optimal, Google has greatly improved the organization of the different sections so that each user can find their favorite programs. This was, moreover, accompanied by the arrival of personalized suggestions, which are neither more nor less than advertisements. Fortunately, they are fed by user preferences to make them useful.

A custom suggestion-free interface in Google TV

The interface is therefore increasingly capable of highlighting content. And that doesn’t necessarily appeal to everyone. Especially to those who would prefer a little discretion towards other family members. Google has therefore pushed an update to the Google TV launcher that includes a mode called “ Apps only (or Apps Only Mode in the original version). This mode differs from the default interface in three ways. The Assistant button is removed, along with access to Google Search. The goal, in both cases, is to avoid disclosing the history of searches.

Last modification, personalized suggestions are removed. Of course, the space where they appeared is not empty. Suggestions are replaced with advertisements that do not use the user’s profile. It is therefore a alternative to a “guest” mode for those who share their television with other people. To activate this mode, you must first update the Google TV application launcher. The version including the mode is numbered 6.0.16. Then you have to activate the mode by going to the menu “ settings “, Then ” account management “. Click on your profile and then activate the “Apps only” mode.
