New Netflix subscription from 1.11. – first forecast of subscriber numbers

The new cheaper Netflix subscription with advertising is scheduled to start on November 1st, 2022. Also in Germany. This date has been leaked but has not yet been confirmed by Netflix. Update: There is new information.

Variety, a US news website specializing in TV and entertainment, reports that Netflix’s new lower-cost subscription plan with ads is set to launch on November 1, 2022. Originally, Netflix didn’t want to start its new advertising-supported subscription model until early 2023, but Netflix is now said to bring forward the start date to forestall Disney. Because Disney, for its part, wants to present an advertising-supported version of Disney+ in the USA on December 8, 2022.

Update 15.9: Netflix expects 40 million subscribers by the third quarter of 2023

In the meantime, figures have leaked out on how many subscribers to the advertising-supported subscription Netflix is expecting. The Wall Street Journal was apparently able to view internal Netflix documents intended for Netflix advertising partners. This should show that Netflix wants to have won 40 million customers worldwide for the advertising-supported subscription by the third quarter of 2023.

Netflix itself has not yet confirmed the launch of the somewhat cheaper streaming offer, which is equipped with advertising, on January 1st, 2022.

In these states, Netflix starts with advertising

The new Netflix subscription with advertising and at a lower price than Netflix without advertising should therefore be available in several countries from November 1st, 2022: in the USA, Canada, Great Britain, France and also in Germany. Variety claims to have learned this from “industry circles” who were informed by Netflix about the streaming plans. The Wall Street Journal had already reported on November 1, 2022 as the start date.

Netflix has not yet commented on the launch of its ad-supported subscription. Variety quoted a Netflix spokesman as saying: “We are still in the early stages of deciding how to introduce a lower-priced, ad-supported tier and no decisions have been made yet.”

This is how Netflix works with ads

Netflix wants to show around four minutes of advertising per hour of airtime for series. In the case of cinema films, on the other hand, there should be pre-roll advertising, i.e. advertising before the film starts. At least the Variety wants to have learned from well-informed sources.

Netflix originals are to be broadcast without commercial breaks when they are first broadcast, and certain children’s programs are also to remain commercial-free. However, the Netflix subscription with advertising will probably not allow downloads for offline viewing of the content. A price of between 7 and 9 US dollars is speculated for the USA.
