New on Netflix: a romantic comedy with two stars of the 2000s scheduled for Valentine’s Day

What is it about ?

Debbie and Peter, two opposite best friends, swap homes for a week and thus discover each other’s lives from an angle that could quickly soften them.

Who is it with?

Reese Witherspoon and Ashton Kutcher in the same movie? No, we are not in the 2000s, but in 2023. Netflix has brought these two stars together in its new You in my house and vice versa – a romantic comedy of course – in which they play two best friends who finally confess their feelings to each other. More old schooltumors.

You at my house, I at your house and we at our house

When Netflix announced the movie You at my house and vice versa, we wondered if we had not fallen into a temporal fault. Because on paper, this new romantic comedy smells like mothballs with its very 2000s cast and its history seen, reviewed and re-reviewed. But this is Netflix’s strategy: to play the nostalgia card.

The platform had already tried it last winter with Christmas falls right on time, in which Lindsay Lohan appears. A winning formula as much for the actress who has been losing momentum for years, as for the subscribers delighted to see her back on the screen.

We cannot say that Reese Witherspoon and Ashton Kutcher are losing ground, far from it, since they have been chaining projects for years, some even with Netflix. But it is in the genre of romantic comedy that the two actors have distinguished themselves in the past.

Toy Boy, Sex Friends or even Valentine’s Day for one, and The Revenge of a Blonde and even Target for the other. If the two actors have never given the reply to the cinema or on TV, we expected despite everything a little more chemistry. Rather, we feel tenderness and respect.

We won’t go back to the ultra predictable plot that can hold a post-it but we expected a better script from Aline Brosh McKenna – already at work on The Devil Wears Prada, 27 Dresses or Cruella again. Everything remains ultimately very wise and agreed but it’s quite watchable because we go until the end of 1h50…

We are even surprised to giggle when our two heroes declare their love or when one of the guests appears on the screen, in particular Jesse Williams (Grey’s Anatomy) and Shiri Appleby (Roswell).
