M3GAN is a cyber-doll whose artificial intelligence is programmed to be the ideal companion for children and the surest ally for parents. Designed by Gemma (Allison Williams), the brilliant roboticist at a toy company, M3GAN can listen, observe and learn while being both friend and teacher, playmate and protector of the child at hand. who she is related to.
When Gemma suddenly becomes responsible for her 8-year-old niece, Cady, whose parents have suddenly died, she is completely unprepared for her role. Overwhelmed and under pressure at work, she decides to link the still-in-development M3GAN prototype to the little girl, in a desperate attempt to solve her problems on both fronts. A decision that will lead to terrible consequences.
The good surprise of 2022
Produced by Jason Blum with a small budget of 12 million dollars, M3gan still created a nice surprise at the American box office by bringing in 70 million profits for Universal. Especially since the killer doll faced a strong competitor – Avatar 2 by James Cameron.
But she still managed to exist alongside this juggernaut. Viewers seem to have been intrigued by the story of this baby-faced android who thirsts for blood. It must be said that this is not a mixture that we rarely see in horror cinema, as director Gérard Johnstone revealed to us in an interview:
“The initial idea came from James Wan to whom we owe many horror films including the series about the evil doll Annabelle. This time he wanted to push the cursor a little further by mixing the concept with Terminator. M3GAN is therefore a sort of mini Terminator which will completely veer into violence.”
Speaking of violence, M3gan is “only” prohibited for children under 12 but was originally supposed to be much gorier (understand, with more deaths). The screenwriters will probably be able to go even further in the sequel which has already been announced and which should be released by January 15, 2025 in France.
A TikTok phenomenon
Johnstone’s film was also able to benefit from a free publicity boost thanks to the Tiktok platform. A few days before the film’s release, Universal shared an excerpt in which we see the cyber-doll doing a few dance steps, before grabbing a knife and chasing her victim:
A video which did not fail to make the rounds on social networks and become a trend in its own right on Tiktok where subscribers had fun reproducing M3gan’s “choreography” on different songs. It is the young dancer Amie Donald, who lends her features to the doll in this scene (and in all the wider shots of the film). On this occasion, she wears a mask which was subsequently animated via computer.
